Modern South Indian clothing — a southern clothing house

The south has its own way with cloth.

Heavy silk.
A wide border.
A thread of gold that runs along the edge
and stays there for a lifetime.

I wanted that edge close to me.
Not in a box.
On my shoulders.

What is modern South Indian clothing

Modern South Indian clothing takes the textile traditions of the south of India and carries them into clothes made for today. The south is known for woven silk, for borders that run the length of the cloth, and for zari: metallic thread woven into the fabric so it holds the light.

Those things usually live in the sari, the veshti and the pavadai. Modern South Indian clothing brings them into garments that are worn every day.

What is House of Sona

House of Sona is a southern clothing house, working between Madurai, London and San Francisco. It is a modern South Indian clothing brand that makes everyday garments from South Indian textile traditions.

"A southern clothing house" is how the house describes itself. The south is the source. The clothes are meant to be worn wherever the people who wear them live.

Why "southern"

Because the textiles of the south are their own tradition, and they are often folded into a single idea of Indian fashion.

The south weaves in its own way: heavy silks, wide borders, deep colours. House of Sona starts there.

The house mark carries a sprig of jasmine. Madurai malli, the jasmine of Madurai, received a Geographical Indication in 2013. The city is known for it.

What does House of Sona make

The first garment is the first weave: a heavyweight cotton hoodie, around 450 GSM, with a woven art-silk panel in the hood.

  • An illustration is woven into the silk panel, not printed on it.
  • An imitation-zari border follows the edge of the hood and frames the face.
  • Red, blue and black are in development.

It is planned for late November 2026. The price has not been announced. A ceremonial version with real gold zari will be made to order from January 2027.

What is zari

Zari is a metallic thread used in Indian weaving. Traditionally, fine silver wire is flattened, wound around a silk core and gilded. Imitation zari gives the same line of shine with other metals or fibres.

The first weave uses imitation zari. The ceremonial version that follows uses real gold zari.

Is the hood silk

The hood carries a woven panel of art silk. Art silk is a manufactured fibre made to take the drape and sheen of silk. The panel is part of the outside of the hood, not a lining.

Who wears modern South Indian clothing

People from the south, wherever they now live. People in the diaspora who want something of home that is not saved for a wedding. People who love South Indian weaving and want it in a garment they can wear on an ordinary day.
