The first weave — a zari hoodie with a woven silk hood
I wanted something I could wear every day.
Not kept in a drawer.
Not saved for a wedding.
Something with the border of a sari in it.
Close to the face.
Where I would feel it each time I pulled the hood up.
So the first thing we made is a hoodie.
Heavy cotton.
A woven panel in the hood.
A line of zari at the edge.
That is the first weave.
What is the first weave
The first weave is the first garment from House of Sona. It is a zari hoodie: a heavyweight cotton hoodie with a woven art-silk panel set into the hood.
House of Sona is a southern clothing house, working between Madurai, London and San Francisco. The first weave is where that house begins: South Indian textile work, carried into a garment that is worn every day.
What is the hoodie made of
- Body: heavyweight cotton, around 450 GSM.
- Hood: a woven art-silk panel with an illustration woven into it.
- Border: an imitation-zari border that follows the edge of the hood and frames the face.
The body is the hoodie. The hood is where the weaving lives.
What is the woven silk hood
The hood carries a woven panel of art silk. It is not a lining. It is part of the outside of the garment, the part that sits around the head and shoulders when the hood is up.
An illustration is woven into the panel itself, rather than printed on top of it.
Along the edge of the hood runs a zari border. When the hood is up, that border frames the face, the way the border of a sari sits at the edge of the cloth.
What is zari
Zari is a metallic thread used in Indian weaving and embroidery. In its traditional form, fine silver wire is flattened, wound around a silk core, and gilded. Imitation zari gives the same line of shine using other metals or synthetic fibres.
The first weave uses imitation zari. We say so plainly.
What colours will the first weave come in
Three colours are in development: red, blue and black.
The final colours will be confirmed closer to launch.
When is the first weave available
The first weave is planned for November 2026, in late November.
The price has not been announced yet. Sign-ups on the House of Sona waitlist hear first.
Is there a gold version
Yes, later. A ceremonial version with real gold zari will be made to order from January 2027.
That ceremonial version is not part of the first launch. The first weave in November uses imitation zari.
Is this modern Tamil clothing
That is how we think of it. Modern Tamil clothing, for us, means the textiles of the south carried into the clothes people actually live in. A sari border at the edge of a hood. Silk set into cotton. Something made to be worn often, not put away.
